7 cool tips for backyard summertime fun

Summer will soon be winding down, so make time to enjoy your yard or patio with friends while you still can!

Here are a few suggestions for a stellar backyard bash, featuring one of our favorite backyards from our current listings.

1. Schedule around the sun

Entertainment Space

High-heat lunchtime gatherings may melt guests’ enthusiasm for mingling. Avoid hosting events at the hottest time of day and instead go for evening get-togethers or late-morning brunches to take advantage of the cooler temps.

Bonus tip: Make the most of your space and encourage your guests to stay longer by placing activities or refreshments both indoors and outdoors. It gives your guests the option to take a break from the heat, and frees up space outside for easier mingling amongst guests.

2. Don’t grill your guests

Back Patio

Don’t set up seating close to the grill. No need for anyone but the chef to feel the extra heat.

We love the flow of this patio on 1910 SW Exeter Lane. It offers ample space for seating separate from the cooking area, as well as a ceiling fan to help keep the chef (and your guests) nice and cool.

3. Host a neighborhood movie night

Borrow or rent a projector if you don’t have one and show a favorite summer flick outside on a hanging white sheet. This is the perfect home for movie night, with the wall to the left of the patio perfect for projecting movies.

With this home’s front exposure facing the northwest, your guests will have the opportunity to watch the sunset behind the front of your home while they settle in for the movie in the backyard.

4. Throw a colorful luau

Luau

Light tiki torches, set up a limbo stick, tell guests to throw on their Hawaiian shirts and blend some coconut cocktails. For inexpensive, themed decor and accents, visit Michaels Arts & Crafts Store in The Landing at Tradition, only 2.5 miles away from this home.

5. Stay hydrated

Target

Be sure to have plenty of refreshing beverages to help your guests keep cool. Stock up at Target at The Landing at Tradition.

Bonus tip: Add fresh fruit, fruit zest or mint leaves to your ice cube trays before freezing to add a splash of flavor and style. Or, skip ice and use frozen fruit like grapes and melon. Frozen beer mugs and shot glasses will also keep drinks chilled.

6. Have the coolest coolers

Fill a wheelbarrow, wagon or kiddie pool with ice to chill drinks. For a more chic look, check out T.J. Maxx, also in The Landing at Tradition for bar carts and other chic drinkware.

Bonus tip: Keep the bubbly and other refreshing libations ice cold for the duration of the whole party by using a bar cart. Just stock with a few items on ice and replenish as needed.

7. Play outside

Enjoy your lawn with a few rounds of croquet, bocce, Frisbee, cornhole or badminton. Plant a couple stakes in the ground and snap together glow sticks for glow-in-the dark ring toss. Leftover chunks of plywood can make a jumbo Jenga set. Find your outdoor games at Target, T.J. Maxx, and Bed Bath & Beyond at The Landing at Tradition, and get out and enjoy your outdoor living space this summer. If you don’t have one, maybe it’s time to talk to a RE/MAX Masterpiece Realty agent.
